FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SUZANNE JOELSON; SLIPPING SYSTEMS

Oct 14th – Nov 13th

Opening Reception: Friday, Oct 14th, 2016 7-9 PM

Studio10 is pleased to present SLIPPING SYSTEMS, Suzanne Joelson’s first New York solo show in over a decade. Some of Joelson’s new paintings are comprised of panels arranged in a Fibonacci cycle. In certain triptychs she slips and rotates the panels, repeating her first aggressive mark into a pattern. The systems she creates in this manner are intuitively interrupted by an image or an act of addition or destruction- an egg, a pocket, or a hole alluding to different types of structures.

Joelson is partial to systems as they reveal the pressure of life’s traffic upon them. In paintings that employ collage and found graphics she litters platonic order with the debris of a lived life. Surfaces of paint and color imply a wear and movement on the materials while also connecting them together. Patterns determine the form of the paintings but also become content- adorning and disrupting sections of the surface as Joelson repeats the format of a painting within a painting in a limited regress.

Slant rhymes and misheard words find their way into Joelson’s titles and are also an important element in her working process. A catalogue will accompany the show with a text by Monica de la Torre.

In addition to shows at Debs& Co and the Wolff Gallery in NYC, Joelson has shown in Germany, India Morocco, Spain and Turkey. She is the recipient of grants and awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, The National Academy, The National Endowment for the Arts and the Tiffany Foundation.

She teaches at the School of Visual Arts and has written for Bomb Magazine and Time Out.
