FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEG HITCHCOCK
10,000 MANTRAS

September 8th - October 8h, 2017
Opening Reception: Friday, September 8th, 2017 7-9 PM

Studio10 is pleased to present 10,000 Mantras, Meg Hitchcock’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. Her carefully cut letters and burn marks repeat mantras and other texts through grid formations and subtle patterns. The pieces iterate various liturgical themes: repentance through repetition, self mortification through cutting and purification with fire and incense.

This new work was created in response to a pilgrimage Hitchcock made in 2015 to Mt Kailash in Tibet, where she travelled in close quarters with several practicing Buddhists and came to question her own religious pursuits. The Tibetan Buddhist mantra, “om mani padme hum” is repeated throughout many of the pieces.

In 10,000 Mantras, Hitchcock’s work examines various religious practices that center around self abnegation and the inherent conflict within our human desire for transcendence.

Meg Hitchcock is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York. She received her BFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute, and studied classical painting in Florence, Italy. Her work with sacred texts is a culmination of her lifelong interest in religion, literature, and psychology. Hitchcock's work has been shown in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, London, and Berlin, and reviewed in Art in America, ArtCritical, The New Criterion, Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, and The Daily Beast. Her work was included in "State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now" at Crystal Bridges Museum in Arkansas.
